Bamburgh Fest, St. Nicholas Hospital
Thanks to funding from SHINE, Bamburgh Clinic recently hosted ‘Bamburgh Fest’, a special event that brought together all three wards in a shared space for the very first time.
Bamburgh Clinic, based at St. Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth, is made up of three 18-bed wards, providing care for people over 18 with a mental illness who require assessment and treatment in hospital. Patients recently moved to Bamburgh Clinic from the Campus of Ageing and Vitality (CAV) in Newcastle, after the clinic’s extensive refurbishment as part of the government’s New Hospital Programme.
Funding from SHINE allowed staff at Bamburgh to purchase an outdoor barbecue. “The BBQ was a great focal point to bring everyone together, and let us begin to build a sense of community within the clinic,” said Clinical Nurse Lead, Kayleigh.
“It allowed us to come together as a whole clinic and share an event for the first time. It was really rewarding seeing everyone pull together and make such a fun and enjoyable day for all of our patients. We even got to see our exercise therapist’s skills at flipping a burger like a pancake!” The atmosphere was lively and warm as patients, staff, and families enjoyed burgers, sausages, and kebabs alongside refreshing mocktails and non-alcoholic beers.
“Our patients appreciated the opportunity to socialise with peers from other wards, and to spend time doing something enjoyable with their families, and our staff loved making time to celebrate and enjoy time together.”
The success of the event has inspired plans to make the barbecue a regular feature during the warmer months. “Hopefully next summer we will be able to host another full clinic BBQ again!”
