This leaflet provides information about Rowanwood at Carleton Clinic, Cumbria. It is a 14 bed acute mental health inpatient ward for men aged over 18.
This leaflet will provide you with information that you will find useful during your stay. If you are not sure about anything in this leaflet please ask a member of staff.
Rowanwood is a 14 bed male acute mental health inpatient unit based at Carleton Clinic, Cumbria.
The service is for men over the age of 18 years who require their mental health needs to be fully assessed in a safe place by a specialist team.
Often when people are unwell they need to have a safe place where they can receive support, care and treatment so they can recover and return to everyday life as soon as possible.
When you arrive you will be welcomed by a member of the care team. They will explain what will happen during your stay and give you a Welcome Guide which will provide you with more information.
The length of stay depends upon your personal needs. The care team will discuss this with you.

- Consultant psychiatrists

- Healthcare assistants
- Assistant practitioners
- Student nurses, Occupational therapists and medics
Prior to your admission a mental health assessment was completed and your capacity assessed. Depending on the outcome of this, you have either agreed to an informal admission or legislative powers may be used.
We ask that you don’t request leave immediately upon admission, as we need to complete an assessment of your needs. All leave away from the unit is granted depending on your mental state and level of risk and is regularly reviewed by our multi-disciplinary team. If you are on a section, you will need section 17 leave prescribed in order for you to leave the unit.
When on the ward, please read the leave policy.
Staff check on you every hour, including throughout the night, to ensure your safety and wellbeing. The frequency of observations can be increased where needed to support your safety.
We value carer and family involvement throughout their loved one’s admission. We run a family clinic every week where staff contact patient’s loved ones, family members and carers in order to gain information about their loved one and offer carer support where appropriate.
Our Trust sites are completely smokefree, which means that neither you nor your visitors are allowed to smoke while you are anywhere on the grounds of one of our sites.
Certain types of e-cigs can be used on Trust sites, but only by service users in outdoor spaces (including ward gardens). Ward staff and the Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service (Quit Team) will be able to support with this.
