Evidenced-based practice is the cornerstone of the NHS. Good quality research improves treatments and services for everyone.
CNTW is a large specialist mental health, learning disability and neurorehabilitation NHS Trust. We are one of the most research-active Trusts of our type in England. We support research and innovation across the organisation and the wider health system.
CNTW offers some highly specialist services. This allows us to support research in some specific areas. We are research leaders in autism, affective disorders, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and dementia. Some of the country’s best clinical academic researchers work with us.
Each year we sponsor around 50 studies. We also host 50-60 large scale National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Regional Research Delivery Network Portfolio-adopted research projects.

Partnerships and research networks
We are a key part of the regional systems which support research. We host the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East and North Cumbria (ARC NENC). This brings together NHS, public health, social care and voluntary sector bodies. It aims to improve local people's health by applying research in practice.
We are also a partner in Newcastle Health Research Partnership, alongside:

- Newcastle University
- Newcastle City Council
- Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria
This partnership aims to translate science and innovation into improvements in local people's health.
Our strong research position attracts pharmaceutical, medical and biotech companies to work with us. We work with companies who share our goal of offering patients and staff chances to take part in cutting-edge research.
