This leaflet tells you about the Memory Assessment and Management Service (MAMS).

We test and look for the common causes of memory problems, like dementia. We see people of any age.
Dementia is a common condition. It affects everyone in different ways. It can affect your:
- memory
- speech
- planning
- finding your way around
- how you feel
Your GP or another doctor can refer you to us.

The clinic is at Alnwood, St Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle.
We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
We close on bank holidays.
Our service is for people who live in Newcastle.
We also see people from some areas of North Tyneside. They are:
- Annitsford
- Benton
- Dudley
- Forest Hall
- Hazelrigg
- Holystone
- Killingworth
- Longbenton
- Palmersville
- Seaton Burn
- Wideopen
- When you arrive, follow the signs for Alnwood
- Then go to Newcastle Older Peoples Service
- Our entrance is Community Treatment Out Patients
Your first visit can last up to two hours.
We will explain how the assessment works. We will talk with you about how we can support you.
After your first visit
Most people have at least two more visits. You may also need tests, such as a brain scan.
- You can bring a family member or friend with you
- Please bring a list of all your medicines
Who you will see
Our team has staff with different skills and training. You will see the person best able to help you. This may be a nurse, psychologist or doctor.
We aim to fully check your memory and give you a clear result. This helps you start treatment and get support.
We can then:
• give advice to you and your family
• refer you to other support services, like Alzheimer’s Society
• offer treatments and services to suit your needs, like
o medicines
o changes at home
o lifestyle changes
o talking therapies

Worried about risks or medication we have prescribed? Call us on 0191 246 8753. We offer phone advice Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. You can also contact your GP.
If you need urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose option 2. This will connect you to the crisis team.
Away from the area and need urgent help?
Call 0191 246 6800. This is the Trust switchboard. They will help you reach local crisis teams.
If there is a life threatening emergency, call 999.

There is pay and display parking on site. You can pay by card or cash.
Payments from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday are:
- Up to 1 hour = £1.00
- 1 to 2 hours = £1.50
- 2 to 3 hours = £2.00
- 3 to 4 hours = £2.50
- Over 4 hours = £8.00

Students may attend your appointment. We will always ask your permission first.
We also support research into memory problems. We may ask if you want to take part.
You can say no. Your care will stay the same.
We keep your personal details private. We only share your details with staff involved in your care. This may include your GP. We will always check with you first.
We keep all records safe and secure.
