Adult Autism Diagnostic Service – Information for referrers

Information for referrers for the adult autism diagnostic services for people living in the Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside.

  • What is the Adult Autism Diagnostic service

    The Adult Autism Diagnostic Service is for adults over the age of 18 years who have a registered GP in Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside and require an autism assessment.

    The service does not provide ongoing support and advice for adults who already have a diagnosis of Asperger’s or Autism Spectrum Disorder.

     

  • Who should I refer

    Consider referral for assessment for possible autism when an adult’s life is significantly affected by one or more of the following:

    • Persistent difficulties with interpersonal
    relationships
    • Persistent difficulties in communicating with
    people socially
    • Resistance to change or restricted interests

  • Exclusion criteria

    Exclusion driteria:

    • A person under the age of 18 years
    • A person who already has a diagnosis of Asperger’s or Autism Spectrum Disorder (either in childhood or by way of private assessment)
  • Who can refer to the service

    There is an open referral system. We accept self-referrals as well as referrals from health or education professionals. Please ensure that the individual is aware of and consenting to the referral.

  • How can I refer

    We have an electronic referral form (link above) which can be completed and emailed to [email protected].

    Please ensure the referral form is completed in full, along with the correct contact details, mobile telephone number and email address of the person, if applicable.

    Please note that information sent to the Trust via email is sent at your own risk.

  • What happens after I submit a referral

    The referral will be reviewed by our clinicians who may contact you for more details. You will receive confirmation of our acceptance or rejection of the referral by post.

    Please be aware that waiting times for an autism assessment vary, and can be subject to change.

    Please ensure that you inform us via telephone or email to let us know if your address, contact details or GP have changed.
