Support for SAS doctors recognised

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW) has been recognised for excellence in developing SAS doctors.  

The Trust has been awarded a Bronze SAS Excellence in Development (SEiD) Recognition Award.  

The award is part of an NHS England scheme designed to celebrate Trusts that support the career progression, wellbeing and experience of Specialty, Associate Specialist and Specialist (SAS) doctors.  

The award requires Trusts to demonstrate the support and development opportunities offered for SAS doctors, providing evidence of being a great place to work and how they support the recruitment and retention of SAS doctors to improve patient care and potentially decrease locum spend.   

Dr Azza Shohieb is a consultant psychiatrist and SAS tutor at CNTW. She said: “SAS doctors make a valuable contribution to patient care, teaching and service improvement.  

“This award reflects the commitment of many people across our Trust. There is still more to achieve but it’s important to recognise and thank those whose leadership, advocacy and belief have helped us reach this milestone.  

“I would like to remember the late Dr Bruce Owen, whose vision for recognising and developing the SAS workforce has shaped many of the elements that contributed to winning this award. This recognition is, in no small part, a legacy of his work. 

“I would also like to express my deep gratitude to Executive Medical Director Dr Rajesh Nadkarni. His open-door approach, willingness to listen and prompt actions to address our concerns have made a real difference to our community.  

“Finally, I would like to thank Elaine Grant, Head of Medical Staffing. Although much of her work takes place behind the scenes, she has been a tireless advocate for SAS doctors, working to support our development and ensure our voices are heard.  

“This is a moment to be proud of and foundation to build on.”
