A special celebration marked the official opening of a newly developed outdoor space at Sycamore Unit, Northgate Hospital.

The area was officially opened by James Duncan, Chief Executive of Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW), during a day of celebrations for patients and staff.

The area surrounds a sycamore sapling planted at the unit last year. The sapling is one of just 49 young trees grown from the iconic Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland, awarded by the National Trust following the loss of the much-loved landmark.

The tree has become a symbol of growth, hope and resilience for patients and staff at the unit.

The newly enhanced area surrounding the sapling has been created thanks to a generous donation from housing specialist Lovell. The project has transformed the space into a welcoming environment where patients, staff and visitors can spend time outdoors, connect with nature and enjoy opportunities for relaxation and reflection.

The garden also features a poem written by a patient about the meaning of ‘Sycamore Spirit’ – the name given to the tree. Inspired by the tree's journey and symbolism, the poem reflects themes of strength, hope and resilience, and adds a personal touch to the space.

The official opening coincided with a festival for patients. They took part in a range of sports and activities throughout the day, bringing people together to celebrate the development of the area and the continuing growth of the sapling.

Sycamore Unit is part of CNTW and provides specialist secure care services.
