What is family therapy?

When a person is experiencing mental health problems this will also have an impact on the lives of those who care about them. This can be a partner, relatives, close friends and others important to you.

Systemic Family Therapy and Family Interventions help those who are concerned about the situation to meet and talk together in a relaxed manner.

These meetings help family members better understand and support each other, improve communication, and draw on people’s strengths to find new ways of approaching difficulties.

Who might benefit from these treatments?

Family Interventions are a recommended treatment for Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder and are helpful where a family would benefit from:

  • Knowing more about the mental health difficulties of their relative, partner or friend
  • Developing a shared understanding of early warning signs, crisis and staying well plans
  • Finding ways to reduce the level of communication difficulties
  • Learning skills to improve communication
  • Learning problem solving and decision making techniques
  • Learning practical coping skills to remain in the present

Systemic Couple and Family Psychotherapy is helpful for a wide range of mental health concerns. It is particularly suitable where a family member is experiencing psychosis, mood, eating, personality/emotional and relational difficulties. It helps where families or couples would benefit from:

  • Understanding and addressing relationship concerns
  • Improving communication and relationships between family members
  • Thinking about the role that each other plays in the difficulties that they face
  • Understanding how the mental health problem effects relationships and roles within the family
  • To think, understand the impact of past and recent stressful or traumatic events on family relationships
  • To think, understand and talk about the effects of social factors on relationships including how this contributes to mental health difficulties and distress.
