Great North Run 2024

The world’s biggest half marathon is back this September and SHINE is pleased to announce that it has secured 10 places again this year.

60,000 runners take on the 13.1 mile route from Newcastle to South Shields each year – if you would like to join them and run for our Trust’s SHINE charity, get in touch with our team.

Our fantastic runners last year raised an incredible total of £3438 for the charity, helping it continue to support patient and carer wellbeing across our services. A big thank you again to: Alice Green, Andy Airey, Danielle Taggert, Edward O’Connor, Edward Philcox, Kat Nicholson, Louise Thompson, Lucy Felton, Molly Summers and Belinia Goncalves.

Kat Nicholson, who ran twelve half marathons, two marathons and an ultramarathon for charity in 2023, chose to run for SHINE at last year’s Great North Run, saying: “I work with patients facing neurological difficulties, often caused by head injuries, who might be in hospital for quite some time. Without money from the SHINE Fund, some of my patients wouldn’t have the means to access things to make their time in hospital more joyful.”

“Sometimes the smallest of things can make a huge difference to patients. For example, board games purchased using money from SHINE are great for helping patients connect with staff or their families.”
