Health secretary announces funding boost for NHS services

Today the Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced that nearly £1 billion is to be allocated to improve health facilities across England.

We are delighted that as part of this allocation we will receive £54m to develop a state of the art secure inpatient facility.  It will operate as part of a whole pathway of secure care meeting the needs of people across the region.

The funding will also enable the creation of a centre of excellence in inpatient acute mental health care for the people of Newcastle and Gateshead.  This will fulfill the outcome of the Deciding Together, Delivering Together consultation which ended in 2016.

This is excellent news, enabling a significant investment to be made in creating state of the art facilities for those with complex mental health needs.  We will work with service users, carers, and the public to ensure that we create world leading environments that truly support people on their journey to recovery, and that in doing so we also continue to break down the stigma associated with poor mental health
