A celebration event has been held at a North East hospital to mark the educational achievements of students with learning disabilities.

Staff and service users at Northgate Hospital in Morpeth, which is part of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTW), attended a presentation event.

The seventeen service users achieved full qualifications in functional skills in English, maths and ICT as well as units towards employability qualifications. James Duncan, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Finance at NTW presented the certificates.

I was delighted and honoured to be asked to present the second Northgate annual education awards on Friday to 17 proud and happy educational achievers.

All of them have worked hard to reach their next level of educational achievement receiving awards for gaining nationally recognised qualifications. Well done to all of the lads and thank you and well done to the fantastic Education team

The presentations included functional skills awards in maths, English and IT qualifications which is a first for forensic services and also five of the seventeen had come back to complete qualifications that they had just failed to reach last year, showing real perseverance and dedication.

Without exception, all said they would like to progress their education further. The education team also offer a reading programme to support those who would like to improve their reading skills as well as a library service.
