John Osborne, Volunteer at St Nicholas Hospital shop

John Osborne is a friendly face at the St Nicholas Hospital shop, where he has volunteered for 15 years.

He usually volunteers every Monday but has been having time off due to a broken hip. It’s clear to see how keen he is to get back.

“I like volunteering because I like meeting people,” John said.

He enjoys the variety of being in the shop, whether it’s doing a stock take or serving patients and staff.

John says he volunteers because he wanted to give his time.

“I was looking at opportunities in the local area and saw St Nicholas Hospital advertised and thought I’d give it a try,” he explained.

“That’s what I’d say to anyone, just give it a try. People might not think about volunteering but it’s such a good thing and you can get so much out of it.”

John has made many friends since becoming a volunteer.

Voluntary Services Coordinator Rebecca Goodburn said: “I can’t get served at the café without people asking after John! He’ll be like a celebrity when he comes back.”

John also prides himself in being the first volunteer back into the Trust after the pandemic. Volunteers were put on hold during lockdown and John was one of many who were eager to return as soon as it was possible to do so.

Another thing John likes about volunteering at CNTW is the community with his fellow volunteers. He is a keen walker and has set up a group called ‘Osborne’s Outings’ where volunteers can meet up for a walk and a coffee. The community is one of the many perks of volunteering for John and that’s why he plans on volunteering for many years to come.
