I qualified in Medicine from University College Dublin, and trained in psychiatry in Ireland, Australia and Cambridge. I gained an M Phil from research into cognitive function in bipolar disorder. I moved to Northumberland in 2006 to take up a Consultant post, and have worked in various parts of Northumberland psychiatric services for older people since then. I was Lead Consultant for the service from 2012 to 2015. I was an elected member and then Finance Officer of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry from 2012 to 2018. In my clinical work I currently cover Ashington, Choppington, Bedlington and surrounding areas, as part of the Community Treatment Team for Older Adults based in Ashington and St George’s Park in Morpeth. I am a Trainer for Core Psychiatric Trainees as well as Higher Trainees in old age psychiatry, and a regular teacher for medical students from Newcastle University.
