I am a consultant psychiatrist in the Regional Affective Disorders Service (RADS) where I now work part-time. RADS provides a tertiary service for ‘difficult to treat’ mood disorders and my role is exclusively in an out-patient setting where I offer assessment consultations. I am also visiting professor at the University of Sunderland in the Department of Exercise, Sport and Rehabilitation Therapies. I obtained my medical degree at Edinburgh University in 1987 and subsequently trained in psychiatry in Manchester, Edinburgh and Newcastle. I became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1993 and a college fellow in 2009. I have clinical experience in a range of settings and was a community psychiatrist in an inner city CMHT from 2003 to 2011, then in an Assertive Outreach Team (2011-2015). I have also worked in in-patient and general hospital settings. My research interests include recovery, social inclusion, mood disorders, and sport and exercise psychiatry. I have published in all these areas including co-editing and authoring several chapters in Social Inclusion and Mental Health (2010) the highly commended handbook of Sports Psychiatry (2016) and a collection of Case Studies in Sports Psychiatry (2020). I have more than 50 peer reviewed publications to my name alongside several book chapters. I obtained an MPhil for my research work in 1997.
