A new film hopes to encourage people in the North East to consider stepping up to an incredibly rewarding job – and become a learning disability nurse.
The GAPS (Good Access to Primary Services) Network, which is part of the Learning Disability Network, is made up of the passionate and committed learning disability primary care facilitators working across the North East and Cumbria. Our network vision is that ‘the North East and Cumbria will be the best place in England to live if you have a learning disability.’
The inspirational nurses, who make up GAPS supported by the North East and Cumbria Learning Disability Network, agreed a priority was to encourage young people to consider a career as a learning disability nurse. It is clear through the wide and varied roles that learning disability nurses have, means that a career in this field could follow a number of exciting, innovative, challenging and rewarding experiences.
We know through our strong relationships with Health Education England: North East and our university providers of nursing degrees, that the numbers of young people deciding to pursue a career in learning disability nursing is falling. The GAPS Network wanted to address this by making sure that there is great information about the variety of career paths learning disability nursing can take and so decided to make this film to inspire, encourage and motivate young people to choose this rewarding career.
